Green Living Guide

The ethical and eco-friendly values of Islam help us in adopting a sustainable, simple, and low-footprint lifestyle. We can achieve this by practicing the following simple five-point formula for green living.

Verily, simple living is part of faith…”
– Prophet Muhammad (SAW)
(Sunan Abi Dawud)

1) Reduce consumption

  • Only buy things that you truly need. For anything else, resist the urge.

  • Consider your material use and make decisions for the environment, both larger lifestyle and day-to-day decisions, from living in smaller homes to ditching plastic.

2) Adopt a vegan lifestyle

  • Cut out all animal products from your diet and lifestyle to significantly reduce your environmental footprint.

  • Eat local and seasonal, plant-based foods.

3) Repair, reuse, and switch to eco-friendly alternatives

  • Adopt behaviours such as cycling/carpooling, switching to green energy, insulating your home, repairing items, and purchasing pre-owned.

  • Opt for fair trade, organic, and biodegradable items with minimal environmental impact.

4) Recycle, compost, and dispose responsibly

  • Only 9% of the world’s recycling is actually recycled so as a last resort, use recycling facilities instead of throwing things away.

  • Compost organic waste such as vegetable peelings, grass clippings, etc.

5) Advocate companies and governments

  • Policy and structural changes hold the key to solving the climate crisis. Contact companies and political representatives to inquire about the measures they're taking.

  • Expand the conversation. Join an organization. Get your friends and family involved.
